The return of the Goon starts here and I’m a happy man! Eric Powell takes the new series to its horror humor-based roots as Goon & Franky return from adventures abroad to find a horde of unsavory characters have filled the void left in their absence from Lonely Street.
Keeping a title that is two decades old fresh while still appeasing longtime fans is never an easy task. but after reading the first issue Powell seems to have pulled it off. For the uninitiated, the comic follows Goon and Franky, two small-time thugs who fight zombies, gangsters, and all sorts of other monsters in their small town.
The Goon is a lot of things. It’s horror. It’s noir. It’s comedy. It’s pulpy. There is just no other comic out now that looks, sounds, and feels like The Goon. This comic also has serious heart. It has the power to wreck you emotionally, and Powell has done this in the past. The Goon is just a lot of fun to read.
And then there is Powell’s art. His style is so unique and I enjoy how he uses different art styles even within the same panel, to convey the mood of the story and the world in which his characters populate. Rachel Cohen’s colors are amazing and gives the book a really fresh feel.
I can’t recommend this comic, and the twenty years of content the came previously, highly enough. If your looking for something different and fun, The Goon is your book.
Rating : 9.5 out of 10 Really go buy this book you’ll not be disappointed!!
